Friday, March 3, 2017 - 8 pm

DANCE: Jodi Porter presents KOLOB. Porter’s work focuses on the re-emergence of spiritual dance themes in a contemporary theatrical space. The piece investigates her view of the spiritual realm of existence following death through a journey of landscapes and physical experiences evoked by the dancers.

Porter’s cast consists of advanced CalArts dancers including Nuri Baylerian, Jete Dongieux, Matt Kuang, Amelia Laughlin, Marie Elena Martingano, Ruchama Son and Angelica Mondol Viana. Other collaborators includes musician Kain Summerlin, costume designer Chardonnay Tobar, lighting designer Rose Malone, video designer Kam Ying Lee, dance film director Heather Rebecca, and VR film by James Hurwitz.

Kolob is a destination known as, “The first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God.” Porter strives to create visual realms of existence through a series of images, movement and original music that aims to transcend the audience’s awareness from temporal to spiritual. Porter, currently an MFA2 candidate at CalArts, is most known for her work fusing contemporary dance with figure skating. She is the founder of American Ice Theatre and since 2002 has been producing dance on ice in performance and education. She also choreographed several modern dance works as Associate Director of Ballet San Jose from 2002-2007. Porter aims to push herself further as a contemporary dance choreographer investigating the non-secular view of western religion inspired spirituality.
