The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance
Daniel Charon's Juncture by Cherise Richards
For the past two weeks, dance students at CalArts had the great pleasure of experiencing the teaching of Daniel Charon. Daniel is best known as one of the faces of Doug Varone and Dancers with whom he danced for 10 years. Having recently left the company, Daniel is wearing some different hats now, enjoying the roles of both teacher and choreographer.
I asked Daniel about his experience teaching at CalArts. He said he found the students very engaged and hard working. “They are curious and think carefully about the information I give them.” He said that he enjoys teaching CalArts students because are at a perfect age and technique level for optimal learning.
During the interview, we discussed many facets of dance along with his personal journey as a dancer. One of my favorite parts was hearing his thoughts on the arc the body goes through during a dancers' life. Specifically, I asked him at what age he thought he had reached peak technical and energetic success or efficiency. He could not give an exact answer. He described an ongoing process. He says his body can’t do things he used to, he had more facility when he was younger, but as an artist he now makes richer decisions about his performance. “If I knew then, what I know now…,” he called it, “the cruel but correct process of growth.”
We caught Daniel in a time of transition. The question, what’s next?, may be a recurring question for some time. He is considering graduate school in order to get the credentials necessary to teach at a college or university. If you’re anything like me, I bet you’re imagining how incredible it would be to have such an amazing performer and accomplished teacher as a fellow student.
Daniel, you’re wonderful. Thank you for visiting us.
